Mixed verdict for Sanjay Dutt

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt was found guilty under the Arms Act by a designated TADA court but was acquitted under the provisions of the TADA Act.

The verdict by the TADA court today convicting accused number 117 under the Arms Act in the 1993 serial blasts here puts the 47-year-old actor's career in jeopardy at a time when it is at a peak after two huge hits -- Munnabhai MBBS and its sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai .

Judge P D Kode acquitted Sanjay of charges under the TADA act, meaning he had not been found guilty of terrorist acts.

The son of two yesteryears' film stars -- Nargis and Sunil Dutt -- Sanjay's life has turned out be a story fit for a Bollywood thriller.

Having started his career with ‘Rocky’ in 1981, Sanjay always carried an enfant terrible image and failed to get going in the film industry. His mother's premature death due to cancer led him to drug abuse.

Sanjay overcame his addiction, visiting a rehabilitation centre in US, but personal problems for him aggravated with the death of his first wife Richa from cancer.

He, however, made a comeback, moving from the lover boy image of ‘Rocky’ to gritty action roles in films like ‘Khalnayak’ and ‘Thanedaar’ in the 1990s.

However, his career suffered another setback when in a development that shocked the nation, Sanjay was made an accused in the Mumbai blasts that killed 257 people and arrested on April 19, 1993. He was released on bail three months later, but was re-arrested on July 14 and remained in jail for 15 months before he was again granted bail.

He was charged with illegally possessing an AK-56 rifle during the 1993 blasts and for destroying the weapon under the TADA act and the Arms Act.

Following is the chronology of events leading to Sanjay's conviction under the Arms Act in the 1993 bomb blasts in Mumbai.

April 19, 1993 : Sanjay picked up by Mumbai Crime Branch from airport after his arrival from Mauritius. He is arrested on the same day on charges of possessing an AK-56 rifle, a 9mm pistol and some Ammunition and later destroying them.

April 28, 1993 : Sanjay makes confession before police.

May 5, 1993 : He is granted interim bail by Bombay High Court subject to confirmation by the trial court.

Nov 4, 1993 : Chargesheet filed against Sanjay.

July 4, 1994 : Trial court cancels his bail and he is arrested again.

Nov 20, 1994 : Sanjay retracts confession.

July 22, 1995 : Sanjay permitted by court to meet his Model friend Rhea Pillai whom he later married. Sanjay visits Rhea in a flat where she is recuperating from an Illness.

Sep 11, 1995 : Trial court rejects Sanjay's bail.

Oct 16, 1995 : Supreme Court grants him bail on Hearing a letter written by him to the Chief Justice from jail. The letter was converted into a petition.

Oct 18, 1995 : Sanjay released from central prison After 15 months.
