How important is the Celebrity Big Brother win for Shilpa Shetty

A one-month stint and an out-of-the-blue win in UK reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother opened up more vistas for Shilpa Shetty with international film offers and endorsements, than her ten years in Bollywood ever did.

"Shilpa has certainly hit a jackpot. She participated in the Celebrity Big Brother at a time when there was a lull in her career. Now she has mega deals, endorsement brands and even a possible Hollywood career lying at her feet," said trade analysts.

Shilpa's father, Surendra Shetty, was overjoyed. "We would like to thank the British public and the media for their support. We are very happy that she won," he told reporters, hours after the 31-year-old actress won the show.

Aware that she would be much sought after when she came out of the game show house, her mother Sunanda flew to London last week and met with several publicists before finally hiring Max Clifford as Shilpa's publicist in the UK, which has a large population of Indian origin.

While Shilpa's last release in India was Shaadi Kar Ke Phas Gaya Yaar , the actress has not had any major hits since the 2000 romance flick Dhadkan to her credit.

However her stint in "Celebrity Big Brother", which catapulted her to UK's national consciousness after being allegedly subjected to racist comments by fellow housemate Jane Goody, has now placed Shilpa on the threshold of an international career that even she may not have contemplated otherwise.

"She is now on the verge of a booming career internationally. She does not need to concentrate on Bollywood as of now. She is getting much bigger exposure," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Most analysts feel the actress will now focus on getting her foot in the door into Hollywood and cash in on endorsement deals and other offers that have come her way, rather than look at resurrecting her career in Bollywood.

"Why would she come back now when she has a much bigger world at her feet now? She has an international presence now and if she plays her cards right, she can make it much bigger. I don't think Bollywood matters much to her right now," says Adarsh.

Industry sources say the dusky beauty may not find the same kind of adulation in Bollywood as she is in England.

"Bollywood works on box office success and Shilpa has not done very well in that department. That is why Bollywood producers will not be lining up to sign her on."

Shilpa currently has two films on the floor, Anurag Basu 's Metro , produced by UTV, and Anil Sharma 's Apne , both of which are set to release this year.

"While she will complete her two remaining projects, she may not have much time or the inclination to do any more films as of now.

"Bollywood will, however, be watching very closely her progress in the Western world, because it can show what Indian stars can do," Adarsh added.

Shilpa entered the Hindi film industry as the long-legged beauty in a film that also marked the stardom of Shah Rukh Khan - 'Baazigar', in 1993. Since then, she has worked on close to 50 films but except for a few stray hits has not been able to hit the top.

Last year, she also tried her hand at television, appearing as a judge on the dance show ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’.
