Konkona Sen didn't want the raunchy role

In this Friday’s release Traffic Signal , Konkona Sen Sharma plays a prostitute.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar completes his trilogy with a movie about the people making a living on Mumbai’s traffic signals. The film has a number of characters like beggars, drug addicts, money collectors, sellers etc. But Konkona’s character is the most provocative of all: that of a prostitute called Noorie who solicits customers at night at the traffic signal.

Konkona, who was the leading lady of Bhandarkar’s Page 3 , was apprehensive about playing the role of a hooker in ‘Traffic Signal’. Moreover, when she read her dialogues and saw the costume that she had to wear, she was completely put off.

She made her reservation known to Bhandarkar. But the filmmaker insisted Konkona to do the role. To cast away her reservation he himself enacted a few scenes for her, recorded the smutty dialogues in a vulgar accent and showed it to Konkona on a monitor.

This helped Konkona make her mind up.

Not just Konkona, Bhandarkar had a tough time convincing filmmaker Sudhir Mishra to do an important role in his film. Sudhir, who has never acted in films, told Bhandarkar that he would make a poor actor. But Madhur wanted him to play an underworld don called Bhaijaan in the film. Finally, Sudhir had to relent.

‘Traffic Signal’ stars Kunal Khemu in the lead role. He plays a young man who collects money at the signal.
