Akshay Kumar – The proud Punjabi returns!

Punjabi blood flows in the veins of actor Akshay Kumar and he is proud of it.

“You can take Akshay out of Punjab, but you can’t take Punjab out of Akshay,” says the handsome actor who hails from the North Indian state of Punjab, and is now one of the top stars of Hindi film industry in Mumbai.

Acting in Vipul Shah’s movie Namastey London was like going back to roots for Akshay. In the film, he plays a good-natured Punjabi who marries an NRI girl from London. Katrina Kaif plays the girl.

For the first half of the movie, Akshay is shown as a rustic guy who wears gaudy, fluorescent Pathanis and traditional jootis. He rides the Bullet motorbike and he milks cows in his backyard. Even Akshay’s dialogues and humour in the film has a strong Punjabi flavour.

Moreover, there is a Christmas jingle in the movie in which Akshay dresses up like Santa in a red turban and sings ‘Jingle Balle’.

While shooting some portions of the film in Punjab, Akshay used to order his food from a local Punjabi dhaba. In Akshay’s words, “it would be cruel to order from anywhere else (a five star hotel) in Punjab.”

Akshay has been promoting ‘Namastey London’ by chatting in Punjabi on radios and TV channels.

The film is directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. It also stars Upen Patel , Rishi Kapoor and Pakistani actor Javed Sheikh . The movie’s story is about clash of cultures and returning to one’s roots.

‘Namastey London’ releases on Friday.
