DhamaalDhamaal : Movie Review

Indra Kumar’s movie Dhamaal is a full timepass entertainer that tickles your funny bone and leaves you with a broad smile on your face.

In this season of successful comedies, ‘Dhamaal’ brings in more cheers. The movie, starring Ritesh Deshmukh , Arshad Warsi , Javed Jaffrey , Ashish Choudhary , Asrani and Sanjay Dutt , is packed with plenty of funny situations with hilarious twists. The comedy in the film is not cerebral. It is a cocktail of slapstick and wit. And the cocktail really works.

The movie tells the story of four good-for-nothing guys. Roy (Ritesh) thinks he has the mind of a detective. Adi (Arshad Warsi) believes he knows about everything under the sun. His younger brother Manav (Javed) is an idiot. The fourth guy, Boman (Ashish), is a phattu.

The lives of the four friends turn around when a dying man tells them about a huge amount of money hidden in a graveyard. But, on a close trail is inspector Kabir (Sanjay Dutt).

‘Dhamaal’ progresses through several hilarious situations as the four friends search for the booty. Their search is fraught with dangers they are not prepared to face.

The movie works primarily because of performances by its starcast. The funniest of the lot is Javed Jaffrey, who, with his imbecilic humour, brings the house down. A close second is Ritesh Deshmukh whose natural flair for comedy injects dollops of humour in the narrative. Sadly, Arshad Warsi is out of form this time. His performance doesn’t have his involvement and energy. Ashish Choudhary is better than him. Ashish does show his flair in some scenes.

Asrani, too, displays his impeccable comic timing. The veteran gets ample footage in the film and it is a delight to see him entertain yet again. Sanjay Dutt is just about okay.

On the sidelines, Vijay Raaj, Manoj Pahwa and Sanjay Mishra chip in their brand of humour.

Director Indra Kumar is in his elements again after Masti . His last film Pyare Mohan was an aberration, but this time Indra Kumar gets many things right.

Right from the start, when the characters are introduced, ‘Dhamaal’ makes its intentions clear, that is to provide unadulterated entertainment. As it turns out, the first half is truly funny. The sequences involving the four friends, and Asrani, will have you in splits. The hilarity continues in the second half with the pilotless plane sequence, or the penultimate scene when all the characters search for booty in a graveyard.

‘Dhamaal’ doesn’t really boast of exceptional music, but the songs are passable and up to the mood of the film. The cinematography is fine but editing is a bit slack at times.

All in all, ‘Dhamaal’ ends up as a paisa vasool entertainer.
