Is beauty and sex appeal in Bollywood skin-deep?

In Rakhi Sawant’s famous words, “Jo Bhagwan nahin deta, woh doctor deta hai” (what God doesn’t give, doctor gives it).

This candid admission came from Rakhi Sawant on Karan Johar’s show ‘Koffee With Karan’ when the host asked Rakhi about reports of her getting breast implants. But not everyone is as frank as Rakhi.

There was a time when the natural beauty of Madhubala and sex appeal of gifted Zeenat Aman was enough to turn people on. But now, when models and actresses are succumbing to the charm of botox and silicone implants, it is hard to tell a real beauty from a fake one.

Those who are not well endowed genetically have now a choice to go under the knife and change their appearance.

Shilpa Shetty doesn’t like being asked about her nose job that has altered the contours of her face. Koena Mitra would not even openly admit to have undergone a cosmetic surgery even though just a casual comparison between her previous face and new appearance shows hints of cosmetic magic on her nose and lips.

And then there are beauties who have attractive faces but were not well endowed below neck to turn the heads of the other sex.

Rakhi Sawant has left nothing to speculation by coming clean about her exaggerated bust-line and we appreciate her frankness. She had told a tabloid: “I was 32 back then, now I am 36. God never endowed me, so a doctor helped.”

Not only did Rakhi admit to having a boob job, she also revealed that she would remove her implants to participate in ‘Nach Baliye 3’ contest because implants obstruct in dancing. Well, that was a little more information than we needed.

Another actress who has apparently got a boob job is Bipasha Basu . This shocking revelation came a few months back when a tabloid broke the news of Bipasha’s cosmetic surgeon not being paid for giving her implants in 2002, before she began shooting for Jism , the movie that featured Bips in a very hot role.

Today, Bipasha is a sex symbol. But questions remain whether she is naturally endowed.

Not just women, even men are turning to cosmetic surgery to enhance their appearance. Everyone knows about Salman Khan ’s hair-implant treatment that has taken longer than expected. Following the same route are Himesh Reshammiya (who conceals his baldness behind designer caps) and Govinda (who recently admitted to thinking about getting hair implant).

On the other hand, there are those who refuse to succumb to the cosmetic charm. Akshaye Khanna , for instance, has stated that he is not uncomfortable with his receding hairline. And among females there is Kangana Ranaut who has frankly asserted her decision to not get the implants to enhance her modest bust-line.

However, sources from within the industry say the trend of cosmetic surgery is here to stay.

“Bollywood stars are going the same way as stars in Hollywood where more and more people are taking the help of reconstructive plastic surgery to look young. And with medical science and facilities making rapid strides in India, not just film stars but any one who can afford it has an open option of cosmetic surgery,” says an industry insider.

The writing is on the wall. In the years to come, it may be hard to tell a fake beauty from a real one. But then, who cares as long as we have to watch them on screen only.
