John Abraham pushed his physical limits for 'Goal'

John Abraham says his upcoming movie Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal is the most physically strenuous film he has done so far.

When John signed the movie, he hadn’t imagined what he would have to endure to play his role of a football striker in a team of British Asians in London in the film. Training with former footballer Andy Ansah prepared John physically and mentally, but nothing could prepare him for the injuries that he would suffer during the making of the film.

And injuries were not few. Muscle pulls, shin splints, calf pains, hamstring and more – all this John had to endure and still be on his feet to shoot the movie. Unlike real football players, John did not have the liberty of having a substitute.

One such injury happened while shooting the climax scene of ‘Goal’ in London. The scene has the most crucial match of the game and John displays many football skills in it. While shooting the scene John fell down and could not stand up again. He felt an agonizing pain in his shin. A doctor and a physiotherapist were called in. John was given acupressure treatment. It took a long time before the pain subsided.

Another injury happened when John was pushed by a player while shooting another scene. The player’s elbow struck John on his nose and it began to bleed. A concerned Bipasha Basu , who plays a physiotherapist in the film, rushed onto the field to give her beau the first aid. Bipasha’s training for her role came handy and the actress nursed John’s nose within minutes.

The film’s director Vivek Agnihotri says not once did John complain to him or asked the film’s shooting to be stalled because of his injury.

In response, John was given best medical attention on the sets. There were acupressure and acupuncture remedies to cure and prevent shin splints and muscle pulls.

‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’ tells the story of a rag-tag team of British Asians in Southall Club who must win a crucial tournament to ensure their club’s survival.

The film stars Arshad Warsi as the team’s captain and Boman Irani as the coach. The movie will hit the theatres on November 23.
