Dus Kahaniyaan : some interesting tidbits

Only rarely is such an experiment tried in Bollywood. Ten short stories directed by six different directors.

It has got sex, violence, love, lust, trust, betrayal, introspection, fantasy, infidelity and much more. Yes, Sanjay Gupta’s Dus Kahaniyaan (don’t miss the slideshow) promises stories with a whole gamut of emotions. It has tales of strangers in love, of husband and wife falling out, of friends-turned-foes, of youngsters high on drugs, of mother and daughter, and of peculiar people with strange tendencies.

And wielding the megaphones for all these ten short films are directors like Sanjay Gupta , Apoorva Lakhia , Hansal Mehta , Jasmeet Dhodi, Meghna Gulzar and Rohit Roy . Of the ten stories, five are directed by Gupta himself.

Here are some tidbits about interesting incidents that happened during the making of the film.

WHEN SANJAY DUTT GOT DRENCHED IN RAIN

Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty are part of the short story titled ‘Rise and Fall’ about two friends who turn into sworn enemies. There is a rain sequence in the film that was shot for more than a week inside Mumbai studios. Day after day, Dutt had to endure the gallons of cold water that was poured over him during the shoot. On the other hand, Sunil Shetty appeared too comfortable being drenched. But it was andar ki baat, literally. Sunil was wearing a wetsuit beneath his costumes all through the shooting of the rain sequence. When Dutt came to know about it he teased Sunil for not have given the same idea to him.

ONE TIGHT SLAP FROM DIA MIRZA

Dia Mirza may look delicate but she sure has the strength to smack someone hard. If you don’t believe us ask Manoj Bajpai , her costar in the short film ‘Zahir’. A scene in the film shows Dia slapping Manoj hard. It was supposed to be a cheat shot, but Dia was so deeply involved in her scene that she actually ended up delivering a tight slap on Manoj’s face. For a moment Manoj was shocked by Dia’s real slap but he did not break his expression to give a perfect shot for director Sanjay Gupta who has retained the shot in the film.

JIMMY GOT TIPSY

Jimmy Shergill pairs with Masumeh Makhija in a short story ‘High On The Highway’, about two youngsters who like to get high and go on a highway. The story has Jimmy’s character drunk for the most part. To make the character look authentic, director Hansal Mehta asked Jimmy to have a few drinks and get tipsy before the shooting. For the first time in his career, Jimmy tried this experiment. Masumeh, on the other hand, had to make do with black coffee only.

NASEER-SHABANA BACK AFTER 19 YEARS

Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi come together to share the screen space after 19 long years for the short story ‘Rice Plate’ which has been directed by Rohit Roy. The two senior actors enjoyed working together after a long gap since their last film ‘Pestonjee’ in 1988.

PRANK ON NEHA UBEROI

Neha Uberoi and Aftab Shivdasani are part of the short story ‘Lovedale’ directed by Jasmeet Dhodi. While shooting in Khandala, producer Sanjay Gupta noticed that Neha was always glued to her phone. So he nicked her mobile. For hours Neha kept looking for the gadget. At last when she found it she was flooded with calls and messages from her friends who kept asking her if she was well. Neha was flummoxed. It turned out that Gupta had sent messages to her friends from her phone saying: “missing you badly, call back soon”. Neha not just enjoyed the prank she also understood Gupta’s point. From then on she kept the phone aside and focused on her work.

‘Dus Kahaniyaan’ is set to hit the theatres on Friday.
