Is skinny really sexy?

It is a contentious debate, but worth indulging in. Does the skinny and over-slim look really make an actress sexy?

Kareena Kapoor has been strict with herself to the point of cruelty. She has been doing everything in her power to lose weight – yoga, workouts and dieting – for her role in Tashan and other upcoming films. Her once curvaceous body has now given way to skinny, boney and emaciated figure. And all this was to make her look “sexy”.

On the other hand, we have someone like Bipasha Basu who loves her curves too much to lose them. Her definition of sexy differs contrastingly from Bebo’s.

Bipasha recently said in an interview to a leading newspaper: “I never believed in being skinny. I feel that the beauty of a woman is in her curves. I am a big girl and I like my curves. I don’t find skinny sexy.”

Many men also hold the same view as Bipasha, if a survey by a leading men’s magazine is to go by. In the survey when men were asked about their fantasy women, majority of them preferred fleshy females over the skinny ones.

And apart from the sex appeal, let us not forget the health hazards of whittling oneself away. Kareena, for instance, got so obsessed with dieting that she nearly fainted while shooting for ‘Tashan’ in Greece. And her dad Randhir Kapoor is a concerned man.

“I have told her to stop the diet business. She has become quite thin and must not lose more weight,” Randhir Kapoor is quoted as saying.

Not just concerned dads, even health ministries worldwide are waking up to the dangers of canonization of this skinny look in fashion industry. It began about one-and-a-half years back when underweight models were barred from taking part in Madrid Fashion Week. Soon other EU countries followed suit and asked their fashion industries to promote healthy models instead of skinny ones, who, it was alleged, make poor role models for thousands and millions of fans.

Coming back to Bollywood, we have model-turned-actresses like Priyanka Chopra who are pretty cool about their physique. Even though she plays a supermodel in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion Priyanka does not deem it necessary to lose more weight for her role.

Others like Kajol , Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan believe in “remaining fit” but they are not game to starve themselves to acquire a skinny look.

For, emaciated look seldom titillates. As Bipasha put it, a woman body is defined by her curves, and not by bones protruding from skin.
