'Race' promises adrenalin rush

This Friday’s release Race promises to take action and stunts in Bollywood to a new level.

Heroes jumping from skyscrapers, heroines running besides exploding cars, and much more pyrotechnics are promised in Abbas-Mastan’s thriller ‘Race’.

Starring Saif Ali Khan , Akshaye Khanna , Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif , the movie tells the story of two brothers determined to outshine each other. The movie is an action thriller and murder mystery pepped up with a dash of romance and humour. Anil Kapoor plays a fruit-munching detective and Sameera Reddy plays his secretary.

The movie has many action sequences picturized on Saif and Bipasha.

A birdie from the production house TIPS tells us that Saif’s introductory scene in the film shows him jumping from a hot-air balloon onto a runaway car.

The scene was shot at Malshet Ghats on the outskirts of Mumbai. Saif insisted on doing the scene himself and went up to the height of 200 feet in an air balloon. From there he did bungee jumping. Before this, action director Allan Amin had already given Saif a brief training in bungee jumping.

The scene shows Saif landing atop a car speeding towards a deep gorge. Just in the nick of time, Saif lands in the car and applies the brakes.

It took director duo Abbas-Mastan five days to shoot the entire scene.

And if this wasn’t enough, there is another scene in the film that has Saif jumping from the 22nd floor of a high rise building.

The scene was canned in Durban.

Before letting Saif do the stunt, Allan Amin used his own stuntman to demonstrate how he would fall from 22nd floor with the help of cables. Though Saif admitted that he was nervous, he decided to take the plunge.

Harnessed with safety cables, the actor stood on the edge of the building and jumped at the call from the action director. Allan used his winching machine on top of the building to give direction to Saif’s freefall.

At the end of the scene Saif was so hooked to this stunt (pun intended) that he insisted on doing it again to give a better shot. The actor actually jumped thrice from the building before he was satisfied that a good shot was taken.

When Saif was showing his dare-devilry, Bipasha, too, was not behind. The sexy lady admits she has a fear of heights. So her stunts were merely restricted to the ground. She shot an action scene in which she ran just metres away from exploding cars.

Director Allan Amin says ‘Race’ has some action sequences that haven’t been seen on the Indian screen before.

Well, that’s quite an audacious statement. We’ll see how much truth is there in it when the film releases.
