Hottie Mallika Sherawat will play a renowned begum from the 18th-19th century in a Bollywood historical.
From spoofing the Mughal character of Anarkali in the upcoming comedy Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam , Mallika has moved on to a more authentic portrayal of a famous Begum Sumroo from the Mughal era in an upcoming Bollywood film.
In the movie, titled Begum , Mallika will play the character of Begum Sumroo who used to be an anonymous nautch girl and a courtesan in 18th century. Her life changed when she married a European, converted from Islam to Christianity, and ruled over a locality after the death of her husband.
It is a complex, powerful character of a woman who chose to live life on her terms.
Director Tigmanshu Dhulia, who will be directing ‘Begum’ for Zee, thinks Mallika is best suited to play the role.
Dhulia has reportedly zeroed down on Welsh actor John Rhys-Davis to play the Begum’s somber-looking European husband.
The movie will be a big-budget costume drama with elaborate sets. It will go on the floors early next year.
