Love Story 2050Love Story 2050 : Movie Review

Sitting through this long, tiring and exhausting love story was like going through 42 drudging years of time.

Damn! I feel old. Feel like the present has flown by too, too fast and future has caught up too, too early. The feeling is dreadful but I'm not fretting. For it is a mere after-effect of having been subjected to three long hours of the 20-reeler Love Story 2050 .

The movie, launch pad of the much-touted Harman Baweja , is a never-ending saga of a man who breaks the barriers of time and travels into future to bring back his ladylove. Sounds quite novel and interesting? But not after you have watched it unfold on the big screen.

The film tells the story of a lonely, loveless rich kid, an adrenalin junkie named Karan (Harman Baweja) who falls for Sana ( Priyanka Chopra ) while holidaying with his friends in Adelaide. After some dedicated pursuing and a couple of ho-hum songs, he manages to win her love. But this love story ends soon and abruptly on a tragic note.

Even as Karan pines for Sana, his eccentric scientist uncle Dr. Khanna ( Boman Irani ) manages to make a time machine. Karan is convinced that he could be reunited with Sana in the future, in the Mumbai of 2050. Then what! Karan, Dr. Khanna, along with two tykes, hop in the time machine (the very sight of which would make the great H G Wells summersault in his grave) and travel to the future Mumbai where people drive flying cars and snake charmers play their been to robotic serpants.

Karan finds his Sana in Ziesha (Priyanka Chopra), a pop, rock star who doesn't believe in love. Karan has just a month to convince Ziesha that she is Sana and bring her back to 2008.

It is clear that director-producer Harry Baweja has pulled out all the stops to give a glossy, glitzy, unique launch to his son. After all, when love is paternal, any producer would bend his rules. So Baweja senior crams in any and every ingredient in the plot to the make the movie interesting. In the first half we have phoren locations, unexciting cycle races, songs on salt lakes along with all the expected twists (the wooing, separation and the eventual reunion) in the love story.

The second half dwells more on the wonders of technology in 2050. You have pop stars performing on a stage floating in stratosphere, or the sari-clad, digital maidservant who pops out of nowhere at the mere mention of her name, or an irritating personal robot Boo who does domestic chores for Ziesha, or a masked megalomaniac Dr. Hoshi who wants to get his hands on the time machine.

All this, the doting dad, Baweja senior, focuses on without caring a hoot for the progression of the story. The film resultantly becomes a mere collage of technological wonders we might see in 2050.

Coming to performances, it seems that all the comparisons to Hrithik Roshan haven't been unjust in the case of Harman Baweja, who not just looks and dances like the former, but even acts like him. However, giving the credit where it's due, it must be said that Harman shows glimpses of a promising star. But he still has a long way to go.

Priyanka Chopra's role doesn't challenge her acting skill and she delivers nothing exceptional. Yes, she does look attractive as Ziesha.

In supporting roles, Boman Irani and Archana Puran Singh are good. But what the heck were the two kids doing in the film?

All in all, 'Love Story 2050' turns out to be a colossal disappointment. It has a flimsy story that has been stretched to a torturing length.

As for Harman Baweja, he sure has love in life, but he still needs some luck. Good luck, boy.

Rating: *1/2
