The year when God came down to Bollywood

Perhaps there was such a great dearth of good subjects in all of God’s multi-dimensional creation that Bollywood directors decided to train their lenses on the Creator himself. But there too, our opportunistic filmmakers nipped a few cues from their counterparts across the Atlantic – Hollywood, that is.

Ever since Morgan Freeman donned all-white to play the God in ‘Bruce Almighty’, the sartorial style of the all pervasive deity has been doubtlessly established. White! No other darned colour would do.


So when Amitabh Bachchan had to step in Freeman’s shoes to play God in Bollywood’s shameless rip-off of ‘Bruce Almighty’, titled God Tussi Great Ho , he donned all-white Versaces and Guccis. After all, the fashion trends of the mortals on the third rock from the Sun are not alien to the Supreme Being.

But before Amitabh, it was Rishi Kapoor who played the roly-poly God with a stylish French cut, using state-of-the-art technology to see from heaven the miserable lives of earthlings in Kunal Kohli’s Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic . The movie had Rani Mukherjee playing a fairy who hops around from cloud to cloud and swims in milky rivers before being summoned by God (Rishi, that is) to cycle down to earth to set straight the tangled lives of a bunch of naughty but loveless kids.

Jeez!

Director Atul Agnihotri was a little more subtle in his depiction of divinity in Hello . The movie revolved around the lives of a few call centre employees who get a life-changing phone call from God when they are faced with death one night. So instead of ‘showing’ God, Atul made Him speak in a deep and gruff baritone. The movie had Katrina Kaif playing an angel who narrates the whole story to a rockstar (of all people) played by Salman Khan .

But it is Saurabh Shukla who takes the cake for his most vivacious portrayal of a gluttonous God in the recently released Oh, My God!! . In the movie, most of the times when God (again dressed in white) opens His mouth, it is not to make a revelation, but to munch in a few pizzas or crunch in a few chocolates. Heaven, perhaps, could do with some fast food joints from Earth. Anyway, the movie had Saurabh playing a God who comes to earth to help a simpleton ( Vinay Shukla ) who fails to see God’s helping gestures.

Coincidentally, all these films that featured the almighty in one avatar or another turned out to be box office disasters.
