Sreekumaran It is not easy to take on two reigning megastars of Malayalam cinema and emerge victorious. That is exactly what young actor Prithviraj has done. He has literally pipped both Mammootty and Mohanlal at the post and won Kerala Government's best actor award this year. 
In a way, the decision has come as a big surprise. Either Mammootty or Mohanlal was expected to bag the prestigious award. Both have turned in powerful performances in their latest films - Mammootty in ‘Karutha Pakshikal’ and ‘Palunku’, and Mohanlal in ‘Rasathanthram’ and ‘Keertichakra’. But the powers that be had other ideas. They sprang a major surprise by choosing Prithviraj for the best actor award for his seasoned performance in ‘Vasthavam’. Interestingly, Mammootty had gone record earlier that he would not win the best actor award this year! He has been proved right. Whatever the spin, the award has come as a shot in the arm for Prithvi, whose father late Sukumaran had also won the best actor award. Congratulations, Prithvi.
