LIFW: Traditional themes set for comeback

Traditional Indian themes are set to make a comeback with every designer's collection having an ethnic touch at the LIFW extravaganza.

Ritu Kumar ’s line of traditional wear showcased on the first day of the Lakme India Fashion Week (LIFW) set the tone for the event which was carried on by other designers using ethnic touch to decorate their collection in their own style.

“A lot of motifs and embroidery work in the garments is used by designers. A traditional approach can be seen in the clothes,” said Raghavendra Rathore, who is known for his trademark bandgala jackets.

Fashion in India will become more regional and ethnic as the target consumer group has now changed to the urban upper middle-class, Rathore said.

“With the retail market in fashion industry expecting a boom, the price range will also come down which is good for customer.”

Another designer who caught many an eye at the ongoing fashion week is Anuradha Wakil, whose designs are essentially Indian in spirit.

“I believe in my tradition, so my clothes are completely Indian,” says Wakil who got actress Shabana Azmi to walk the ramp in her show.

According to designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Indian styles stand out in the designer collection because of the extravagant use of vintage brocades and embroideries.

Meanwhile, designer Deepika Govind feels that for Indian fashion industry to compete with foreign labels at the international level, the time was ripe for designers to exploit the rich tradition of Indian garments.

“If we cannot compete with China in price, we can certainly make the best advantage of our rich textile heritage and technique which sells abroad,” Govind, who is known for her experimentation with silk fabric, said.
