Fashion extravaganza kicks off in Delhi

The typical glitz and gloss was subdued by earthy hues on the ramp as Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) began at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan on Wednesday with a message to save the earth.

WIFW, arguably India’s most stand-out fashion event, will see collections by 82 designers over the period of five days.

The event began today with designer Vikram Phadnis ’s show, themed ‘Save The Earth’.

The show began with the sounds of jungle, and dancers swaying to the beats of primitive drums. The models walked the ramp wearing outfits reflecting the basic natural colors – greens, aquamarine blue and earthy shades.

Phadnis’s collection saw jackets, knee-length dresses, pleated skirts and shirts in fabrics like georgettes, linens, and silks.

The young designer says he wanted to give a relevant message in the opening show of the fashion week.

“My collection was inspired by elements of nature like soil, water, leaves etc,” Phadnis is quoted as saying.

WIFW is being attended by buyers from London, Paris, Tokyo and Europe.

"There will be about 150 domestic and foreign buyers, including organised retailers like Reliance Retail and Pantaloon. Of this, 50 buyers are from European and other countries," Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) Director General Rathi Vinay Jha told a news agency.

Fifteen new designers would make their debut at this year’s WIFW.
