I'm single and ready to mingle: Shilpa Shetty

With her career on a high after a runaway win in Celebrity Big Brother, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has said she is ready for a boyfriend, but potential suitors must pass the scrutiny of her father.

Shilpa, who received overwhelming support from British viewers after being racially abused on the reality television show in London, said she planned to extend her stay in Britain, as her mother Sunanda is keen on looking for a match for her.

"I'm single and ready to mingle!" Bollywood's long-legged beauty said in an interview to the Daily Mirror, confessing she hasn't had a boyfriend for 18 months.

But potential suitors are likely to face a grilling from her businessman father Surendra, she quipped.

"If a guy wants to take me out, he must seek my dad's permission first. That's just the way it works. I secretly brief them about the best answers to give to my father's questions before they face him," the 31-year-old actress said.

But that hasn't stopped dad vetoing a good few.

"I try not to mind when that happens because parents are always right in the long run. Even when mum and dad give me permission to go out on dates, I must always go with a male chaperone and my sister and be home before 2 a.m. I cannot attend a party alone," she said.

"It might sound funny to people here, but that's just the way it is with my family."

Shilpa admitted her parents have been pressurising her to marry but is relieved they stop short of picking her a husband and arranging her marriage.

"Yes, many people in rural parts of India are very orthodox and have arranged marriages. But I won't - I want to fall madly in love with someone and be whisked off my feet.

"Lately mum and dad have been putting pressure on me to marry, because it's relatively old to be single at 31. I don't want to go into a marriage just because of my age - too many people make that mistake," Shilpa said.

"I thought I would marry five years ago, but that relationship just didn't work out. I had my first boyfriend at 23 and fewer than five in my whole life.

"I'm a pretty low maintenance girlfriend - all I ask is that he buys me lots of diamonds!" she quipped.

She does not want a big wedding and would "like a giant sparkling ring, but the event could be quite small."
