'Chandni Chowk To China not based on Akshay’s life'

Tue, Jan 13, 2009 12:00 IST

Chandni Chowk To China There has been a notion that Chandni Chowk To China is based on the life story of Akshay Kumar . But the film’s director Nikhil Advani denies this.

The movie has Akshay playing a cook in Chandni Chowk who is mistaken as the reincarnation of a Chinese warrior and is taken to China where he learns martial arts to fight an evil gangster. If we take a peek into Akshay’s life we see that he comes from Chandni Chowk and went to Bangkok where he worked as a cook before getting a break in Bollywood.

Director Nikhil Advani, however, says the similarities between Akshay’s life and the movie’s story are superficial.

"I would like to clarify that the film is not based on Akshay's life, but it only has similarities with his life," Advani is quoted by a news agency.

"Just like Akshay went to Bangkok from Chandni Chowk and worked there in a hotel, the character Sidhu (in the movie) is a cook from Chandni Chowk, who goes to China and is compelled to learn martial arts in order to meet his destiny," he added.

The movie, jointly produced by Warner Bros and Rohan Sippy , also stars Deepika Padukone in a double role.

Nikhil Advani who has so far directed romantic films like Kal Ho Na Ho and Salaam-e-Ishq , takes a different route in CC2C which is an out-and-out comedy.

"I shouldn't be expected to make only romantic movies throughout my life. I'd like to be a director who can make any kind of film. I think every director should be willing to make any genre of film as long as the film is interesting,” Advani is quoted as saying.

"And for that matter, 'Chandni Chowk...' is a new genre for me that I've been waiting to work on since a long time. I also have other different subjects in the pipeline like a very inspirational film about a kid called 'Chand Bhai' and an animated project 'Ab Dilli Door Nahin'," the young director added.

‘CC2C’ is set for worldwide release on January 16. The movie has more than 1,500 visual effects.
