SCOOP!! & NEWS Remembering the great Ustad Nusrat16th Aug 2004 15.39 IST By Nitika Desai Seven years ago on this day, the music world lost a great exponent of qawwali – the unparalleled Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan . On 16th of August 1997, Nusrat passed away at the age of 49, much to the shock of his fans in Pakistan and India. This was about the time when Ustad’s popularity was rapidly increasing in India. Today when Ustad Nusrat lives on through the great music he created, let us take a look at the live of this master. 
Nusrat was born in 1948 in Lyallpur (now Faisalabad) in Pakistan. He came from a distinguished family of musicians steeped into classical and mystical Islamic tradition. As a child and as a young boy Nusrat got formal training in classical music and mystical Sufi poetry in Persian, Punjabi and Urdu under the tutelage of his father Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. Nusrat took over the leadership of the qawwali troupe in 1971 following the deaths of his father and his uncle. This was the turning point in Nusrat’s career. At the annual Sufi festival in Lahore, Nusrat was swept forward on a wave of devotional fervor and acclaim on the first night’s performance in 1972. In the years to come, Nusrat came to be known as the undisputed master of Qawwali (often referred to as Shehenshah-e-qawwal). His singing style and his art transcended all boundaries of language and religions and attracted fans from all corners of the world. Western singers and musicians like Peter Gabriel and Michael Brook collaborated with him on many musical projects.
