HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | MUSIC Diversity of Indian music stifled: Shubha Mudgal26th Aug 2007 10.33 IST By Agencies Observing that Western and Indian instruments have always been used for compositions in Indian film music, noted singer Shubha Mudgal said the diversity of Indian music has been "spoiled and stifled". In an interview on BBC 'Ek Mulaqat', to be telecast on Sunday, Mudgal expressed disappointment over an increasing lack of dedication toward the universal art of music. 
"Dedication towards music and art is no longer there. Movie songs are not the only representatives of Indian music, we have classical music, folk music, religious music and tribal music, as part of our culture," Mudgal said. "Women used to sing various folk songs on different occasions but today you don’t find all that. Diversity of our music has been stifled...look around you - everywhere there is violence and unrest," she added. Speaking on the trend for remixes, the artist expressed surprise as to how it could be accepted as art form. "When you create a remix you are giving that song a new life. So first you should know who is the original composer of the song, I think to spoil the musical feel and thought of the composer of the song is wrong," Mudgal said. "You remove tabla and dholak and add drums and keyboard, are you trying to convey that tabla and dholak are old, so don’t use it? I don’t understand this logic," she said. Related Shubha Mudgal |
