A debt-ridden young man Jeetu has an old father, who is harassed and humiliated by the daily calls of various money-lenders. However his attempt at suicide is also unsuccessful, and he ends up in a fisherman's net. When awakened from his near drowning, Jeetu finds himself in Kolkata, in the august presence of boat owner Gundya and fisherman and sidekick Bandya. Jeetu pretends to be deaf and dumb, so that he can sponge off them. However he finds himself "mortgaged" to Prabhat Singh in return for Gundya's boats, and thus ends up as a servant in a palatial haveli in Kolkata. Here he meets Prabhat Singh's beautiful daughter Meenakshi and dumb not deaf niece Shruti. When, many convolutions later, Jeetu and Shruti fall in love, Mangal is ready to get them married, but more problems occur . . .

Speak a lie and sooner or later you will have to cover it with another lie. Priyadarshan 's forthcoming movie 'Chup Chup Ke' is a situational comedy based on mistaken identities and well-crafted lies.
The film has Shahid playing a loser who goes by the name of Jeetu. A small-town guy, Jeetu is engaged to Pooja (Sushma Reddy). But Jeetu hasn't got any success in life. Overburdened by debts, scorned at by his future father-in-law, Jeetu takes the desperate step and jumps into the sea to end his life so that his family could benefit at least from the insurance money.
But, as luck would have it, Jeetu is fished out by two fishermen Bandya (Paresh Rawal) and Gundya (Rajpal Yadav). Bandya and Gundya mistakenly believe that the man they have saved is a millionaire. Jeetu too plays along with them and pretends that he is deaf and mute.
Bandya and Gundya decide to use their windfall catch for settling their old debt to a Gujarati businessman named Prabhat Singh Chauhan (Om Puri). They give Jeetu to Prabhat and get their debts settled.
By a strange coincidence, Prabhat Singh's niece Shruti (Kareena Kapoor) too turns out to be mute, but not deaf. Shruti has an elder brother Mangal (Sunil Shetty) who is very over-protective of her. Mangal is trying to get Shruti married. But when the engagement is called off, the entire family is left in disgrace.
Jeetu tries to make his own place in the Chauhan household. He gets along well with Shruti and her cousin Meenakshi (Neha Dhupia), who is Shruti's voice. But one night of drunken revelry, when Jeetu hits the bottle and sings, reveals his truth to the two girls. They now know that Jeetu was feigning deafness and muteness.
But then, an incident happens that makes Meenakshi question Jeetu's intentions. Jeetu is accused of betraying the family's trust for money and is handed to police. The cops beat Jeetu. But soon his innocence is proved. When Jeetu returns home, Shruti confesses her love for him.
In the meantime, Mangal (Sunil Shetty), the overprotective brother of Shruti comes to know of her romance with Jeetu. But he doesn't beat the young guy. Instead, he asks him to marry Shruti. Things never looked so perfect for Jeetu.
Just when everything seems to be going hunky-dory, Bandya and Gundya (the two fishermen) pay a visit to Jeetu's native village. What happens next turns everything upside down once again for Jeetu. Will he ever be able to get out of the mess of lies he has created for himself? Will he and Shruti get married?
Priyadarshan, the master craftsman when it comes to comedy films, has chosen yet another story full of chaotic and confusing situations and characters. Priyan's last movie Malamaal Weekly enjoyed a fairly decent run at the theatres. 'Chup Chup Ke' might end up having a similar, if not better, fate.
So far, Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor's jodi has not been able to give a single hit. Their movies like Fida and 36 China Town have gone down at the box-office. Let's see whether 'Chup Chup Ke' gives the couple their first hit together.
'Chup Chup Ke' is slated to hit the theatres on June 9.
