RATING: 6 Sanjay Bhansali's much-awaited magnum opus “Devdaas” has some melodious numbers that would linger in memory. The music, composed by Ismail Darbar, has a very Indian feel to it. The lyrics are penned by Nusrat Badr.
A highlight of “Devdas” is Maar Dala a courtesan song beautifully sung by Kavita K. Subramaniam who has sung all the songs for Madhuri. Ismail Darbar uses a nice combination of Indian instruments to lend a classical touch to this number.
Shreya Ghosal, a new singer on the block, sings for Aishwarya in Bairi Piya, a pleasant romantic number full of teasing and cajoling. Its pace is slow while its pitch oscillates between the lower and higher octaves. Mellow voiced Udit Narayan also shares the microphone for a small part of the song.
Silsila Yeh Chahat Ka once again has Shreya Ghosal showing her vocal skills. The song is about a maiden in distress awaiting her lover's return after a long separation. Then Kahe Ched Mohe is a pure classical number that will catch the fancy of those who like Hindustani classical music. The song is composed and rendered by famous Kathak dancer Birju Maharaj. It also has Kavita Subramaniam and Madhuri singing for a small part that shows a teacher training her student.
Then follows Chalak Chalak, a lively number about two bottle-hitter's carousal in a drunken revelry. The song, sung by Udit Narayan and Vinod Rathod, is picturized on Shahrukh and Jackie Shroff.
Hamesha Tumko Chaha and Woh Chand Jaisi Ladki are two slow numbers that gently tugs at the listener's heart. And Morey Piya has a good amalgamation of Tabla, Dafli and Ghungroo, while Dola Re Dola is a sort of competition song between Madhuri and Ash. It has both Kavita and Shreya showing their vocal range to the hilt.
On the whole Devdaas' music is mellifluous and quite different from the present genre of popular music full of techno gadgetry.
