The melodious riddle - The Paheli Music Review

M M Kreem is one of the most underrated composers of film music in Bollywood. His compositions and musical style bear a remarkable blend of modern sounds with the old world charm.

In Paheli, Kreem has used melodies that create a desert landscape in the mind of a listener and transports him into the midst of colorful characters replete with emotions varying from love, separation, teasing and celebrations. The lyrics for the songs are written by Gulzar.

Paheli is a Shah Rukh Khan home production. Besides Khan, the film stars Rani Mukherjee, Sunil Shetty, Juhi Chawla and Amitabh Bachchan. The film tells the story of a woman abandoned by her husband after marriage. She falls in love with a ghost who acquires her husband's appearance.

The album opens with Dheere Jalna which is without doubt the best compositions in the whole package.
A soft and lilting number, this song has a subtle sensuousness and love expressed soulfully by singers Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal. The album also features an instrumental version of the song.

Shreya and a good number of other female singers along with Sonu Nigam render Kangna Re which is based on classical raga. What is remarkable about this number is how Kreem keeps its music so simple in spite of so many singers.

Then follows a fast paced track based on Rajasthani folk music. Phir Raat Kati is a short number featuring Sukhwinder Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan. While some listeners may not like Kreem's fusion of the Rajasthani folk with contemporary style, Sukhwinder's spirited rendition adds incredible energy into this song.

Laaga Re Jal Laaga is again very rustic in flavor. Gulzar's lyrics in it speak of celebrations and blessings of life. The song is sung by MM Kreem, Sonu Nigam and Shruti Sadolikar.

Khaali Hai Tere Bin is a song about separated lovers. The commendable singing by Hariharan and Bela Shinde, and the violin accompaniment in the backdrop, verily express the pain of separation.

The album concludes on a teasing note Minnat Kare which is about a group of girls teaching a bride-to-be about the tricks of subtle seduction. Sung by Shreya Ghoshal, Madhushree and Bela Shende, the song grows on you after repeated hearings.

All in all, a melodious album.
