The puthupettai Movie Review

A wholesome entertainer

A lot of pre-release hype had been built around Tamil film 'Puthupettai'. Well, director Selvaraghavan has not let down the Tamil film goers.

'Puthupettai' has all that is needed to move the average Tamil film fan : emotion, violence, music, romance and shades of sex too.

Selvaraghavan is ably assisted by both leading characters, Dhanush and Sneha, who have done a creditable job in delineating their characters with gusto and passion.

The major drawback of the film is its length. It could have been edited better. But unfortunately, the director has not given adequate attention to this aspect. The result is an overly long film.

Music director Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed a number of melodious songs that go with the mood of the movie.

The story revolves round Kokki Kumar, an orphan played by Dhanush with verve and feeling. Kokki is forced to leave his slum dwelling after his father kills his mother. Kumar comes into contact with a gang of criminals controlled by Anbu.

Slowly and inexorably, Kokki is sucked into the world of crime. His skills are sharpened by a gang member, Ravi.

In between, Kumar runs into Krishnaveni (Sneha), a prostitute. Both get attracted to each other. Kumar tries to persuade Anbu to stop harassing Krishnaveni. But Anbu refuses. And inevitably the duo clash resulting in the death of Anbu.

Kumar now has become the gang leader. The rest of the movie depicts how he emerges as a king of crime and a henchman of a political party.

Dhanush and Sneha get excellent support from Sonia Agarwal and Azhagaperumal. Cinematography of Arvind Krishna is superb. His innovations with the camera compel attention.

All in all, a nice movie that throbs with passion as well as violence.
