The ApunKaChoice movie review of Ready. Salman Khan can do crazy things to a movie. With as little as a wiggle of his butt or a not-so-subtle Dhinka Chika-thrust of his pelvis he can lighten up a song and make you forget momentarily -- just like the Aamir Khan of Ghajini -- that the film you are watching has no freaking plot. In Ready, when Salman twitches his neck, yanks his collars up, slides his goggles Dabangg style at the back of his shirt, and proceeds to summarily bash up the bad guys black and blue, the plebeian gentry in theatres reacts with ear-splitting wolf whistles. Some even break into an impromptu jig in the gangway. And, when Salman bhai (not bhai for the girls, of course!) takes off his shirt and shows off the muscles that he acquired sweating out in the gym while the writer-director of the film slept on job, the female janta is left licking their chops. Hotdogs be damned!

But Salman is only Salman, not Superman. For how long can he remain shirtless or flex his muscles. If the script is hell bent on plumbing the depths of silliness, as if to make the Razzies appear as Oscars, what can a handsome star with perked up looks and swagger do? He can only play along and once in a while try to wriggle out of the grasp of the harebrained script and entertain the audience. That he surely does in Ready, but not often enough to merit a ripsnorting review.

Throughout Ready, Salman Khan makes an overt attempt to underplay his character, as if “self-control” is his new acting mantra. He plays Prem Kapoor, a guy from a rich, happy and Hum Aapke Hai Kaun-type family. He loves to unite the lovers who are being forced into marrying someone else by their parents. So at the very start of Ready, we are blitzed with cameos from Zarine Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt and Kangana Ranaut. Done and dusted with these appearances, the film proceeds to tell a story of a girl named Sanjana (Asin) trying to escape the clutches of her two greedy uncles who want to forcibly marry her to their respective sons to take over the Rs. 200 crore inheritance left to Sanjana by her deceased mother.

Escaping her uncles, Sanjana enters the Kapoor household and pretends as Prem’s bride-to-be. By the time her truth comes out Prem is already in love with her and devices a plan to save her from her avaricious uncles. What follows is silly and childish madness and mayhem that plods on and on for hours before director Anees Bazmee shows some mercy for the movie buff and draws the curtains.

And for those who have been itching to know if Ready is indeed funny, here’re some instances of Bazmee’s brand of humour: a snooty son of a don is humbled by pulling his pants down; the baddies chasing Prem are rained down on by the pee of the urchins answering nature’s call in their balcony; one baddie pauses in his tracks to fart and then resume the chase; Prem’s family pushes each other in a swimming pool and his father (Mahesh Manjrekar) complains “mera woh geela ho gaya hai”.

Which brings us to perhaps the only grin-worthy humour in the film that comes from Manjrekar playing a forgetful father who always replaces crucial words in his sentences with a ‘woh’ and thereby adds double meaning to a number of dialogues. For example: “Main usme apna woh daal doonga.”

In supporting roles, Paresh Rawal is totally wasted as the embezzling accountant, and Sharat Saxena and Akhilendra Mishra as feuding brothers are over the top.

In a nutshell, Ready is a film that never gets steady or goes nowhere. It is strictly for those folks who can unblinkingly watch Salman Khan for close to three hours. The story and the film be damned!
