- The Saathiya Music Review

By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Rating: 4/5

'Road' boy Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukherji are pairing for the director Shaad Ali's Saathiya music for which has been composed by A.R. Rahman.

The album opens with the title song Saathiya, a melodious number with the rich flute solos and guitar accompaniment in the backdrop. Lyrics by Gulzar are good and Sonu Nigam's rendition is appreciable.

The album then gets into a festive mood with Chalka Chalka Re sung by Richa Sharma, Mahalaxmi, Vaishali, and Shoma. The song is a wedding number with a distinct South Indian flavor.

Then follows the titillating dance number Aye Udi Udi with a catchy melody and a sensuous orchestration in the backdrop. The track, rendered spiritedly by Indipopper Adnan Sami, has a jazzy feel to it.

Rahman's musical genius comes to the fore in Chupke Se which has a delectable blend of two different melodies. The talented composer brings the striking contrast between mellow and solemn Sadhna Sargam and forceful interludes of Murtaza and Qadir.

However, the following number Oh Humdum falls flat owing to overuse of techno gadgetry and mediocre rendition by singers Kay Kay, Shaan, Kunal and Pravin Mani.

Rahman wields the microphone for the next number Mera Yaar Mila De a sentimental song sung from the perspective of a lovelorn guy. The music is solemn and accompanied by heavy beats in the background. Gulzar's lyrics are poetic. The same goes for Mangalayam which figures in the later part of the album.

The album switches to romantic mood with the traditional track Naina Milake in which Rahman has kept his music very simple with a mere Dholak supporting the singers Sadhna Sargam and Madhushree.

The album closes on a high note with the pacy track Chori Pe Chori which is sung by Asha Bhosle and Karthik. Rahman makes the song foot-savvy.

On the whole Saathiya has one of the most commendable compositions by Rahman. Gulzar's meaningful words enrich the album.

Movie Review : The Saathiya Review (3/5)
The chief shortcoming in Saathiya is its hackneyed storyline. The theme of lovers facing parental opposition, getting married in secret and then parting ways is not new. However, Shaad Ali's sense of cinematic presentation lends a novelty to the film despite the fact that the ...
