“There is nothing more deadly than a father pushed too far...” says the punchline of 'Tathastu', a movie directed by Anubhav Sinha . The film tells the story of a father who takes law into his hands in order to save his ailing son's life.
Sanjay Dutt plays Ravi, a middle-class man who works in a factory for a meager salary of Rs 5,000 a month. Ravi is married to Sarita (Amisha Patel) and has an eight-year-old son who is very fond of playing cricket.
Despite their financial troubles, Ravi, Sarita and their son make a happy family. Ravi's world comes crashing down after his son collapses while playing cricket. Doctors diagnose a hole in the little boy's heart and suggest a heart transplant surgery.
A heart transplant needs lakhs of rupees. Ravi tries to raise the money by asking for help from his office, the insurance companies and the loan lenders. But he is turned back from every door.
In the meantime, the little boy's condition worsens as he stops responding to the medication. Sarita begins to lose hope. She beseeches Ravi to do something fast to save their son's life. Ravi decides to take an extreme step.
Ravi goes to the hospital, points a gun at the doctor, and takes all the people in the waiting room hostage. His demand is clear : his son should undergo a heart transplant operation or else he won't set any hostage free.
Outside the hospital, police cordon off the area and a stubborn cop plans an operation to neutralize the threat from Ravi. The plan is to secure the hostages even if Ravi needs to be killed for that.
Inside the hospital, Ravi is extremely kind and considerate to his hostages, who in turn begin to empathize with him. In the meantime, the news of Ravi's intentions and his extraordinary effort to save his son's life spreads in the city and people start gathering outside the hospital to support him. In the operation theatre, Ravi says his final goodbye to his son, knowing well that the cops can break in any time. The son will have a heart transplant operation, but Ravi may end up loosing his own life.
'Tathastu' is inspired from the Hollywood movie 'John Q' that starred Denzel Washington in the lead role.
The movie is produced by Nitin Manmohan. Vinay and Yash have written the film's screenplay and story.
