The Tum Milo Toh Sahi Movie Review

Coffee, pyar aur timepass

In the mood for a sweet-n-sour tale of subdued romance, muted caring, lofty ambitions, unfulfilled dreams, relationship complexities and cathartic redemption of the heart? Tum Milo Toh Sahi might just be the flick to while away a sleepy evening.

Dimple Kapadia plays a parsi woman Delshad who runs a coffee corner named Lucky Cafe which is the favourite haunt of the aam Mumbaikar, from business executives to college students. Nana Patekar plays an eccentric, perennially peeved lawyer Subramaniam who refuses to change with times and lives reclusively in his house. Delshad and Subramaniam - two people headed separately to the sunset of their lives. Can they be together?

Sunil Shetty and Vidya Malvade play a married couple. Love and happiness have fizzled out of their lives in the struggle of making a career, raising a family and paying EMIs. Can their marriage be saved?

Rehan Khan and Anjana Sukhani play two college going youths with their own attitudes, scruples and shortcomings. Can they discover love in a chaotic city?

Delshad’s chai ‘n coffee corner is the common thread between all the three stories. But then a multinational company eyes to acquire Lucky Cafe to open its own coffee restaurant. That’s when the patrons of the cafe, helmed by the tetchy lawyer Subramaniam, come together to save what they see as a heritage.

‘Tum Milo Toh Sahi’ works as long as Nana and Dimple are there on the screen. The repartee between the two, their bittersweet tiffs and muted caring, makes for some of the touching moments in the film. Sunil Shetty as the money-minded husband and Vidya Malvade as his sulky wife pitch in fine performances. Rehan and Anjana as the youngest of the three couples don’t really hold your attention. And that’s partly because their roles haven’t been fleshed out properly.

The songs could straightaway be axed from the film, and the courtroom drama in the second half does look a tad farcical at times. Director Kabir Sadanand comes very close to making an enjoyable story but fails to handle the multiple stories format with aplomb.

All in all, just a timepass watch over a cuppa of coffee.
