In his first rom-com ‘What’s Your Raashee’, director Ashutosh Gowariker introduces a budding composer. For a director who has given musical hits like Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar moving away from his favourite composer A R Rahman could not have been easy.

So, does the newcomer Sohail Sen, son of musician Sameer Sen, live up to the expectations? ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ music album has thirteen songs, unusual for any contemporary movie. Javed Akhtar has penned lyrics for the twelve sun signs describing the situations and characters with passion. Ashutosh has opted for some new singers like his own sister Aslesha Gowariker. The jamboree of thirteen songs starts:-

What’s Your Raashee (Pal Pal Dil Jisko Dhoonde)
This song in the voice of Sohail Sen is the track meant for an ‘Aries’ girl. The soft jazz number is not high on instruments and will touch you with its simple tune.
Jao Na
The strumming of guitar strings stirs your heart. Sohail Sen is good behind the mike, amply supported by Tarannum Malik’s sassy voice. The song praises an ‘Aquarius’ girl.
Aaja Lehraate
Another fresh song sung in casual style by Shaan and Bhavya Pandit, this number is for a ‘Gemini’ girl, but it’s not that remarkable.
Bikhri Bikhri
Sohail Sen gets to sing this lovely, melodious song for a ‘Cancer’ girl. The music of this song about keeping hope lingers even after it is over.
Maanunga Maanunga
Oh! He can sing! Director Ashutosh Gowariker sings this middling song with Pamela Jain. A situational track where a guy has surrendered to a dominating Libran girl who sings, switch on karun tujhe, switch off karun tujhe hai, yeh mere bus main.
Sau Janam
A Piscean girl sings about love and togetherness. The expert Udit Narayan, the honeyed voice of Madhushree, and the emotive appeal in Sohail Sen’s vocals, ‘Sau Janam’ is like a classic love song.
Aa Le Chal
It’s hard to get away from an attractive Scorpion girl. Aslesha Gowariker wields the microphone for her first song and sings Aa Le Chal Mujhe. The song, though, is not up to the mark.
Pyaari Pyaari
Sohail Sen chants Pyari Pyari like a mantra, smitten by a sweet ‘Virgo’ girl. The romantic mood continues with this track as the melody queen Alka Yagnik tries to sing in a restrained yet appealing voice.
Su Chhe
Energy pumps in with the pump organ, harmonium, as the song Su Chhe starts. This song wins you instantly as Bela Shinde holds the mike to sing maza ma, representing a vivacious ‘Taurus’ girl.
Salone Kya
A Sagittarian girl tries not just to teach about love but also to seduce. Tarannum Malik sings like an enchantress, whereas Sohail sings a few lines like yeh suvidha hi duvidha hai.The song has a touch of slight Arabic music, but the tune is forgettable.
Dhadkan Dhadkan
A haunting number, this song comes as a shock as the composer takes the same catchy tune of Su Chhe to churn out this sad track. It’s a ‘Leo’ girl singing about the dilemma involved in love.
Koi Jaane Na
The traditional folk music visits the album as a twelfth number. Rajab Ali Bharti and Bela Shinde have done their job passionately for this essentially classical number that is meant for a Capricornian girl with intense emotions.
What’s Your Rashee? Chehre Jo Dekhe Hain
The song encapsulates all the emotions in the album. Chehre Jo Dekhe Hain is like a gujarati thali as you get to hear every kind of music from western, jazz to Indian and Bollywood. It’s a medley of all the twelve tracks of the movie

In short, ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ music score offers you variety even though most of the songs are romantic numbers. The tracks, though situational, are perky, pacy as well as hummable.
