Yahaan is the first feature film by award winning ad filmmaker Shoojit Sircar. The movie, set in the beautiful Kashmir valley, has Jimmy Shergill playing an idealistic army captain and newcomer Minissha Lamba a Kashmiri Muslim girl.
Captain Aman (Jimmy Shergill) is posted in the terror-stricken Kashmir valley. During one of his patrols in the beautiful lakes of the valley, he comes across a local girl Adaa (Minissha). It is love at first sight for both of them.
However, the two face strong disapproval from Adaa's family and the local Kashmiris because of the unwritten diktat in the valley that debars any relationship between local women and the outsiders.
The two lovers pine for each other. Meanwhile, the call of duty takes Aman far away from Adaa. Things get murkier after an attack on the family, followed by a court martial and a hostage situation.
Does Aman's idealism have a chance in a brutal situation like Kashmir? What would be the culmination to the pious but prohibited love between Aman and Adaa?
In director Shoojit Sircar's words, 'Yahaan' brings out the conflicts in the battles between the army and the terrorist groups. It re-examines the issue of autonomy through a journey that questions the meaning of freedom for the Kashmiri people.
'Yahaan' is the first ever movie made in never-before-seen locations in the Kashmir valley. The film was shot in places like Habakdal and Tanhipura where no movie had been made before.
'Yahaan' had its premiere at the 7th Osian's-Cinefan Film Festival in New Delhi. The film bagged a Special Jury Award at the fest.
The film has music by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics by Gulzar.
